The Greenville Drive hosted a First Responders Day Sunday at Fluor Field.
Henry Schein presented this day to pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of First Responders throughout the Greenville community.
"It's breathtaking in some ways,” said Greenville County Sheriff Will Lewis.
Before the game, hands on exhibits, patrol cars, EMS vehicles and much more were there for the game attendees to explore. Kids attending the game had the opportunity to parade around the field before the game as “Future First Responders”.
"That's the best part, you get to see these kids connecting with law enforcement and first responders in general,” Lewis said.
"We got to run them all over our equipment and actually give them a ride on the infield on one of the chief's vehicles,” said Greenville Fire Chief Steve Kavalcik.
First responders said the game couldn't have come at a better time after a tough week, which included a homicide and an officer involved shooting.
"Folks don't understand the mental anguish and the impact that our jobs have not only the individuals but the family as a whole because the family has to often help us through some of the things that we see," Kavalcik said.
First responders said they have to be there for the folks on their worst days, but often times it's a thankless job.
"They don't get to say thank you because of the situation but it is important,” said Diana Thome, with Greenville EMS.
That’s why crews said the game was so important, a reminder that their work doesn’t go unnoticed.
"One thing I really love about this community is that everybody pitches in and everyone helps each other out,” said Greenville Police Chief Ken Miller. “So it's a special community."
Hundreds stood on their feet and clapped, but not all first responder were given a standing ovation. They said it’s because the job is never over.
"For every man and woman that's here today enjoying the day with their family there are that many that are still on the streets doing their jobs to make sure the community is safe," Lewis said.
