The 23-year-old construction worker was revealed to have departed the ITV2 show yesterday, with fellow islander Dr Alex George breaking the news to his co-stars during last night’s instalment.
A source has since told The Sun Online: "Duty of care is the most important consideration on shows like this and as soon as he felt unwell, ITV would have had a discussion with him about leaving.
“The decision they took would have been taken between all parties with Niall’s health being the only consideration,” they added.
The Mirror reports Niall came to the mutual decision he leave should leave with the help of production staff.
The publication claims he “fell ill suddenly inside the villa” nine days into his time on the show.
When asked by Express.co.uk, ITV declined to comment.
Love Island favourite Niall previously sparked concerns from friends after his mysterious exit.
Those close to him revealed they didn’t know what was happening with their pal, telling the publication: “We don’t know what’s gone on and we haven’t spoken to him so we’re in the dark.”
Second said Niall’s friends were just as stunned as fans by the dramatic news.
“We just found out when it came on the press,” they said.
“We are as shocked as everyone else is. It’s a shame as he was doing really well and taking the show by storm.
“He is really popular as he’s a lovely boy,” the source added.
The dashing star has not yet broken his social media silence since leaving the villa and has yet to speak out on the reason he left.
On the show, Dr Alex, 27, told the gathered islanders: “For personal reasons unfortunately he can’t continue or come back to the villa.”
He later said in the Beach Hut: “I’m obviously sad that Niall’s left the villa. We got on really, really well.
“He’s such a great guy and I look forward to catching up with him and having some fun with him outside.”
Georgia Steel, 23, who was coupled up with the Love Island contestant before his exit, admitted: “Obviously I was coupled up with him so obviously I came closer to him than most people here but it wasn’t just that.
“He was actually my friend, my buddy,” she aded.
Initially, Niall paired up with Kendall Rae-Knight, 26, before newcomer Adam Collard, 22, stole her away from him in the first week.
He later found a spark with Georgia after she entered the villa alongside fellow new addition Rosie Williams, 26.
After the news of Niall’s exit was revealed yesterday afternoon, former Love Island star Dom Lever was quick to comment on what might happen next.
Taking to Twitter, he told his 166,000 followers: “Nahhhh mate Niall gone, who’s betting Georgia jumps ship like ASAP???”(sic)
Fans were divided over the 27-year-old’s swipe, with one replying: “To be fair they only been coupled up a few days.
“So what is she does… if they had been together a while and were official then fair dos.”(sic)
“I reckon she’ll jump ship pretty quick tbh,”(sic) a second chipped in, while a third said: “She’s been waiting for a way out! Far too excited when the new boys came in.”
Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
