A New Jersey man renting an Airbnb in New York City has been charged with hiding a recording device in a bathroom so he could watch others use the toilet and shower, police said.
Ron Rothman, 44, of the Ringoes section of East Amwell, faces two counts of unlawful surveillance, an NYPD spokesman told NJ Advance Media Thursday.
An NBCNewYork.com report said Rothman asked the two female hosts questions about their bathroom habits while staying at the Airbnb. One of the women also found an iPhone in a backpack left in the bathroom and a recording device plugged into an electrical outlet, the report said.
The camera faced the toilet, authorities said.
Rothman was renting one bedroom in a three-bedroom apartment on Mulberry Street, the report said.
"Airbnb takes privacy extremely seriously and there is absolutely no place in our community for this kind of illegal and outrageous behavior," Airbnb said in a statement. "The individual involved has been permanently banned from our community and we have reached out to law enforcement to offer our assistance with their investigation."
