Raiders sign one draft pick and two undrafted free agents

The Raiders inked fifth-round pick Johnny Townsend on Monday, the team announced, officially locking up the only punter on the roster.

Townsend’s 46.2-yard punt average ranks first in SEC history, as the former Florida special teams star finished his career with 11,090 yards on 240 punts. He’ll start for the Raiders at punter barring catastrophe, given the team waived the only other punter on the roster last week in UC Davis product Colby Wadman.

Oakland picked Townsend No. 173 overall in the fifth round on April 28. He landed 90 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line in college and received second-team All-American honors as a senior.

Townsend is the third of nine draft picks signed, joining sixth-round linebacker Azeem Victor and second-round defensive tackle P.J. Hall.

The Raiders also signed undrafted free agents Dallin Leavitt, a safety from Utah State, and Drew Scott, a long snapper from Kansas State. Both participated in Oakland’s rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis.

Leavitt played two seasons with the Aggies after transferring from BYU, starting 26 games over his 45-game college career with seven interceptions, 211 total tackles and eight pass breakups.

Scott, who served as the Wildcats’ primary long snapper for the final 26 games of his career, joins Andrew DePaola in Oakland’s long snapper group. DePaola, 30, became the league’s wealthiest long snapper earlier this offseason when the Raiders signed him for four years and $4.27 million with $875,000 guaranteed.
